Making hand-embroidered letters is a fun way to customise many kinds of presents and goods. If your Pinterest feed is any indication, it appears like needlework is making a comeback in modern crafting. It's fascinating to see all the beauty and craftsmanship that can be achieved from this old technique, from floral to geometric, from flat to thick stitches, and everything in between. It's inspired us so much that we've decided to bring back this childhood pastime and begin teaching embroidering.
Stay with us as we reveal these Basic Stitching Stitches For Beginners if you're motivated to try embroidery for yourself (or, like me, dust out those threads and needles). Embellish something special you've crafted with embroidery letters to give it a personal touch. It's a personal and meaningful approach to make a very unique gift. Babywear with embroidered letters is particularly popular. Baby bibs, receiving blankets, samplers, and photos to commemorate a new baby's arrival.
To begin an embroidered project, you don't need much. Only a few essential supplies are required:
Embroidery Needle: Most stitching techniques require embroidery needles in sizes 1-10, which can be purchased in a box (like this one).
Embroidery floss - Embroidery floss is a name for embroidery thread that is made up of up to six strands twisted together to make a single thread. DMC Cotton Embroidery Floss is one of the most versatile embroidery flosses on the market.
Embroidery (small) scissors — You can use any pair of scissors, but for such a delicate craft as embroidery, We find that little scissors are easier to use.
Cotton, linen, muslin, flour sack, and aida are typically the best fabrics to use because they have a lower thread count (enabling the needle to slide through a little easier). (Because aida is often pre-starched, it is stiffer and may need to be washed to soften it before you begin.) DMC sells a range of aida and other fabrics here, but any of the other fabrics indicated above can be found on Amazon, Etsy – including at this shop – or other craft stores in your region.)
Embroidery hoop - An embroidery hoop helps you design by keeping the cloth taut. Many artists are now using the hoop as a frame and hanging their work directly from it. Hoops are available in a range of sizes. An embroidery hoop is actually two hoops joined together.
To get the stitches just right, you'll need some patience. They must be even, with the letter area correctly filled up.
The decorative stitches are kept limited by stitching a border or outlining the letter's contour.
The most often used stitches for forming letters are listed below. Each fundamental stitch has its own set of variations and can be joined with others.
If the letters are larger and need to be bold and gorgeous, cut out and appliquéd fabric letters work well. To give the letter some solidity, a double-sided interfacing (Vilene) backing is a nice idea. For appliqué, capital letters in basic bold typefaces are a suitable choice. A blanket stitch can be used to sew the fabric letters on. The benefit of blanket stitch is that it has an edging built in. Each letter has a very crisp finish as a result of this.
A popular lettering technique is chain stitch. Curves are easily navigated with this stitch. Double chain stitch and braided chain stitch are two variations of chain stitch that add thickness and dimension to the basic chain stitch. The length of the chain stitches should be reduced for smaller lettering. This stitch was really simple and quick for us.
My preferred hand stitch for needlework lettering is backstitch. It's quick and easy to use, and it's ideal for outlining larger block letters. Backstitch can be used to make delicate letters, or fill in the centres of bigger block characters. French knots, seed stitch, or satin stitch could have been used to fill the ABC below.
Cross-stitch is another common stitch for filling in the outline of a letter. This is made easier by working within a backstitch outline. Cross stitch comes in a variety of styles. For the more daring embroiderer, different countries have put their own spin on cross stitch. Hungarian cross stitch and Greek cross stitch are two interesting cross stitch designs that might work well as letter fillers.
Running stitch produces simple stitched letters and is particularly attractive for finer, larger characters. With its up and down the action, even beginners may complete these embroidery alphabet stitches. The Running Stitch is created by running the needle and thread up and down the fabric at a regular interval. To make your work look attractive, keep the stitch uniform. The stitch length on the front side may differ from the stitch length on the underside. However, in order to preserve the stitch's attractiveness, we recommend keeping the stitch lengths as consistent as possible.
